Hamptons Chef Society Parties With A Purpose For Diabetes

Chefs Prepare Healthy Gourmet Food For Tour De Cure

Hamptons, N.Y (June 10, 2011)  — Diabetes affects many people, with more being diagnosed each year. Hampton’s Chef Society is doing its part to help fund diabetes research by preparing gourmet food for Tour de Cure beginning tonight and continuing through the weekend.

The Tour de Cure is a bicycle ride in support of finding a cure for diabetes. Last year, more than 50,000 cyclists in 43 states participating by raising money and taking to their bikes for this important event.

The chef’s society will donate their time to prepare healthy feasts, both before and after the ride, for members of the “Team Dia-LEE-Tes,” organized by Lloyd Campbell and Ann Pogue Campbell, whose son, Lee, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes three years ago.

“Diabetes is a deadly disease that many times can be controlled with a proper diet,” Chef’s Society Founder, Peter Cooke, said. “Our food will be delicious and healthy with a focus on fresh, local ingredients.”

Cooke and the society are always willing to help out a good cause and jumped at the chance when approached by Lloyd and Ann. The culinary event will begin with a pasta dinner tonight at the Pogue-Campbell residence prior to the ride with mint lime ade and cranberry peach iced tea, whole wheat pasta primavera and multigrain garlic bread, mixed green salad with roasted Sang Lee varietal tomatoes, a light anchovy Caeser salad and fruit salad for dessert.

“Our menu selection is designed to be healthy and provide them with the energy and stamina they need for the ride ahead,” Cooke said.

The fun continues after the ride on Saturday at the Tour de Cure Dinner. The meal begins with Heriloom tomatoes in a homemade bleu cheese dressing, corn on the cob, pan roasted root vegetables, Haricot Verte Salad, peppered scallion corn bread combo with and without jalepeno, Lloyd’s Catch of the Day, warm grilled Atlantic tuna salad, herb grilled shrimp, lamb kabobs, chicken payard and fresh peach and mango bellinis with or without sparkling wine.

Team Dia-Lee-Tes have raised at least $27,514 for the American Diabetes Association as well as $3,000 for the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center. The Dia-Lee-Tes will ride the North Fork on Long Island with stops at Raphael Vinyard in Peconic and Pugliese Vineyards in Cutchogue.

Recently I was greeted with an enthusiastic ear from none other Stacy Dermont the legendary foodie from Dan’s Papers. Her and Bob Edelman have been all about helping HCS come together with her full-page feature in this weeks (Sept 24,2010) issue, “Hamptons Chefs Unite”.  It was an honor to be featured and will be more of honor to welcome Stacy here at HCS as a contributor.
